lmia Wood 2005 exceeded its organizer's own expectations. The
exhibitors made a greater effort than ever before, the right kind of
visitors came, and the fair was covered by more than 200 journalists
from around the world.
Elmia Wood 2005 was preceded by many expectations. One of the most
important was a clear focus on quality. Exhibitors wanted to reduce the
proportion of machine-interested visitors from the general public, and
instead focus their resources on potential customers. One of the
measures was to reduce free tickets, which automatically led to fewer
but more motivated visitors.
The measure did not have much of an impact on the attendance figures.
50,050 different visitors were recorded in the course of the four fair
days, compared with just over 54,000 at Elmia Wood 2001. There were an
additional 7,800 repeat visits to the fair.
Friday saw the most visitors, with 19,300 people. That is a record for a single day in Elmia Wood's 30-year history.
The number of foreign visitors increased, with the greatest increases
from Brazil, Spain and the Czech Republic. More than 200 journalists
from around the world reported on the fair, which means that Elmia Wood
2005 will have long-term effects and influence more people than ever
before.
Elmia Wood is a well tried concept which became a little bit better
this time. The trails were made two kilometres shorter thanks to the
use of shuttle buses between the small and large-scale trails.
"The shuttle buses worked really well and gave visitors time to see
more of the fair," said Johnsen. He saw the buses as a key to having
more flexible fairs in the future.
Above all, Elmia Wood 2005 proves that the Nordic cut-to-length method
is taking an increasing share of the world's forestry. The clearest
trend at this year's fair was larger machines. The fact that new models
are unveiled at Elmia Wood sends a clear message about the fair's
growing importance as a meeting place for the international forestry
world.
