The International Motor Show (IAA) is the most important and
comprehensive trade fair for the entire automotive industry anywhere in
the world. The IAA Cars showcases not only passenger cars, vehicle
tuning, passenger car trailers, and workshop and garage equipment, but
also concentrates especially on the manufacturers of automotive parts
and accessories. Over 500 system and module manufacturers – the 1st and
2nd tier suppliers, which also include several small and medium-sized
companies – add to the Show. There are also displays by logistics
providers, various authorities and associations, publishers and service
providers. The international character of the trade fair makes it a
meeting place for decisionmakers in the global automotive industry.
Almost 1 million visitors come to the IAA in Frankfurt every two years,
and nearly 40 per cent of them are professional visitors. Three
quarters of these come from the automotive industry itself, and more
than one third come from abroad. The large number of world premieres
and new developments that are unveiled – from the entire industry –
make the IAA a truly unique marketplace for innovations, so it is a
must for developers and other senior technical specialists from the
automotive and supply industries. Although the majority of visitors are
most interested in the latest vehicles, the IAA is a lot more than just
a public exhibition. The fact that it is an industrial trade fair is
emphasized by a series of specialist events tailored to the interests
of the industry and the areas of economic and transport policy.
However, the IAA is a large event with a carnival-like atmosphere,
especially on the weekends. This also makes it an indicator of consumer
confidence and purchasing behavior, both of the public in general and
of motorists in particular. The proportion of younger visitors is
especially high; the IAA is a highlight for schoolchildren, students
and trainees who wish to find out about the job opportunities offered
by the industry.
Almost 40 per cent of the more than 1,000 exhibitors come from abroad;
they occupy a disproportionately large amount of the total exhibition
area of 170,000 sq m. Nearly half of the exhibitors currently come from
non-European countries. Recently the Asian regions in particular have
increased their presence - these exhibitors are thus underlining their
growing significance in the global industry. The majority of the
exhibition space is, of course, taken up by passenger car
manufacturers. No other trade fair in the world offers carmakers a
similar opportunity to present their range of products to an interested
audience. And this applies equally to automotive supply firms. More
than 30,000 sq m of the exhibition space is reserved for automotive
suppliers, development service providers and suppliers of workshop
equipment. Here interested visitors can find everything that determines
how automobiles are developing at present and how they will develop in
the future. For these reasons visitors give the IAA top marks in all
areas surveyed. The size of the trade fair is as fascinating as its
comprehensive scope, the international character of the exhibits and
the information for visitors. This is helped by the media coverage,
provided by 15,000 journalists from all corners of the world.
