The overarching theme for the 2008 Conference is 'Engaging Students in Higher Education', with the following three sub-themes:
• Higher Education Policy
• Scholarship of teaching & learning in the disciplines
• Innovations to support the student learning experience
The overarching theme of the Academy's 2007 Annual Conference is Engagement, with three sub themes of higher education policy, scholarship of teaching & learning in the disciplines, and innovations to support the student learning experience.
Engagement
Engaging students in the process of their own learning is a primary goal for everyone involved in higher education. This engagement, whether it be in the university setting, their homes, workplaces or overseas, defines the student learning experience. All aspects of university life are involved, from the academic who designs and delivers the curriculum to academic developers and student support officers.
Engagement is also a portmanteau concept insofar as it contains many diverse aspects. Universities respond to the need to engage with employers to inform their curricula. Within their localities and regions, universities engage with their communities in multiple ways, including socio-economic development. Universities in the UK operate in global arenas and in national and global contexts.
The broad theme of the Academy’s Conference in 2007 is “Engagement”. This concept is central to the idea of the student learning experience but is a portmanteau insofar as it encapsulates many differing ideas.
Higher education policy
This theme looks across the broad scope of policy in higher education and includes the role of Government and the funding bodies, international drivers and local policy within an institution. Workshops, papers and symposia will enable discussion of the impact of policy on practice.
Scholarship of teaching and learning in the disciplines
This theme aims to allow contributors to explore all aspects of scholarship in teaching and learning, particularly in relation to specific disciplines. Workshops, papers and symposia will encourage cross-disciplinary discussion of well-developed research exploring the development of pedagogic knowledge and understanding and its application in practice.
Innovations to support the student learning experience
In 'Strategies for effective dissemination of project outcomes', 2005, Southwell, D et al use innovation in higher education to refer to "an idea, product, process or service that adds value, is useful or transforms current practice in the context to which it is applied. 'First-generation innovators' are those who do or create something new or different. 'Second-generation innovators' are those who take an innovation from one context and replicate, adapt or transform it for use within a new context".
In this strand contributions will be made by colleagues who have been first or second generation innovators in supporting students' learning experiences at any level - from a single module to institution-wide. We encourage contributors to emphasise the impact that the innovation has had and how the other delegates can replicate the process or impact.
